It’s that time of the year again at Lincoln Center in Manhattan…….New York Fashion Week! This article is for all of you who roll your eyes when you hear something like “fashion week”. What you may dismiss as silly or inconsequential is in actuality a multicultural event that inspires creativity, celebrates talent, creates jobs, and consistently pushes the envelope creatively and technologically. It helps the local economy as well. According to a recent press release from Mayor Bloomberg, NYFW generates $865 million annually with over 500 shows and 23,000 attendees. Mayor Bloomberg also launched a free “Fashion Entrepreneur” M.B.A. program at F.I.T. to support those in the industry citing that “New York’s fashion industry is a magnet for talent from around the world and an engine for job creation in all five boroughs” (NYC.gov PR-054-12). The fashion industry is a critical driver of the NYC economy, employing 173,000 people, accounting for 5.7% of the city’s workforce, and generating nearly $2 billion in tax revenue and $10 billion in wages annually.
Being an east-coaster who has lived in the Big Apple during this event (back when it was in Bryant Park) I can tell you that there is a aura of glamour and excitement during this week. The more fashionable avenues of the city go on lock down nearly as bad as the lock down during a U.N. conference. Model and celebrity sightings are commonplace causing the city to feel like they’ve had an Los Angeles infusion for a week. On opening night alone, everybody from Kim Kardashian to Miss Piggy was out supporting their favorite designers. And then there are the clothes. Like many women, I love looking at clothes, especially the ones that I can’t afford so fashion week is like Christmas for my eyeballs. I usually get more excited about the fall/winter clothing but seeing that I live in Arizona now, I think I should start paying more attention to the spring/summer lines. It is only day 2 of the Spring 2013 shows so I will be reviewing selected designers and trend-spotting next week. Since I work in social media and the fashion industry is notoriously cutting-edge, I will also be commenting on how social media was employed during the event so stay tuned for Part 2!

We are displaying again at the March meeting of the Academy of Comprehensive Esthetics in Tampa, March 12-13. It’s a small group, but we feel a good connection with the ACE membership. They are generally very Internet savvy, and seem to understand the need to have a website that is visited.
We’re excited to welcome Drs. Tom Hedge and Kathy Frazar as clients. They are two board members of ACE. We are creating another website for them for their Houston practice. Our goal is to get this website ranked #1 for Houston Cosmetic Dentist on Google.

Yesterday, we got our display that we’ll be unveiling at next week’s ACE Symposium on Periodontics and Systemic Health in Scottsdale. Chris, Pam, and the folks at Mousegraphics did a great job with it, and we’re excited for everyone to see it!
We have to be cautious, though, with our marketing. We are getting a steady stream of new clients from word-of-mouth referrals, and from dentists who are discovering us on the Internet. They find a website that is ranked #1 for some key search term, and they find out that we are doing the SEO, so they hire us. We can accommodate growth, but if we grow too fast, we won’t be able to maintain the quality of our services. As a result, we’re being modest in our marketing efforts.
