Instagram for desktop gets a makeover!
The new layout features larger pictures and offers much less clutter with more white space. They also got rid of the old header they used to have. Overall, I like the new layout. I just wish there was an upload feature for desktop so I don’t have to burn through my phone’s battery whenever I go on a posting spree! Don’t forget to follow us on Insta. Insta Exploration Just Got Better
Just like the construction project that was supposed to be just a breakfast nook but snowballs into a whole new living room, Instagram must have been on an improvement high last week because the entire search/explore page is revamped as well. You can still search for someone by their username or for a hashtag. There was also a less robust “explore” option for when you were bored, enabling you to explore new accounts that have content similar to people you follow or posts you like. The old look was just a long feed of seemingly random images. Now, there’s a layer of organization to your exploratory undertakings.
The heading they deleted from the old desktop profiles makes a debut as slider where you can explore places, people, and events that are currently trending. Right below that is a row you can scroll through of trending hashtags, a feature that will undoubtedly be exploited by marketers such as myself looking to piggyback on popular discussions to gain attention. After that is the regular endless mishmash of posts that we’re already familiar with.
Personally, I think the “Explore Places” feature should instead be a zoom-able map of the world with pins all over so you can explore the world through the eyes of every day people.
That’s my favorite thing to do in Instagram. Whenever someone posts with a geographic tag, I click on the tag to explore the area on everyone’s feed who has been there. It’s really fun to explore some obscure Russian town through the eyes of those who live there versus whatever preconceived stereotype I may have.
